CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has for the first time overtaken Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka to emerge as India's top electronics exporter in the fiscal year ended March 2023 as the global giants Foxconn and Pegatron accelerated iPhone exports last year.
Exports data released by the Central government for FY23 shows that Tamil Nadu’s electronics exports almost tripled in the last fiscal and stood at $5.37 billion up from from $1.86 billion in the previous year. This helped TN swiftly climb the ladder from the fourth spot in FY22 to bag the top spot in FY 23.
A review of data from FY 17-18 to FY 22-23 shows that TN, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have been in the top three but the state never made it to the top. Industry trackers and executives TOI spoke to confirmed that this is the first time ever that Tamil Nadu has overtaken UP and Karnataka.
A senior official with the state industries department confirmed to TOI that this is the first time TN has surpassed other states in electronics exports. "The iPhone exports from Foxconn are a large contributor, and there has also been an increase in the exports from other EMS players like Salcomp, Sanmina and others," the official said. "The next focus is to increase the value addition done in the state; efforts are on to grow the electronics components manufacturer base as well," the person added.
In October 2022, EMS company Sanmina also commenced operations of its joint venture with Reliance Industries in TN making advanced telecom equipment. TN continues to be in the top for April and May 2023 as well. The ramp up of operations by Tata Electronics at Hosur is expected to add to the state's might in future years making the top place sustainable.
In FY23, Uttar Pradesh came second in electronics exports, exporting $4.90 billion and Karnataka third with $4.52 billion. In FY22, TN exported electronic goods worth $1.8 billion, $1.6 billion in FY21, and $192 million in FY20.
The fortunes of the state's EMS sector have bounced back from a time when global giant Nokia had to shut shop leaving their factories in the Sriperumbudur belt vacant. TN now houses various leading contract electronics manufacturers including Foxconn, Pegatron, Salcomp, Sanmina, Flex, and others. Electronics components ecosystem too is widening with Delta Electronics and others setting up shop here in the last fiscal.
However, assembly of smartphones still holds the largest share in the state's TN exports and efforts must be made to increase components manufacturing, automotive electronics manufacturing etc, an industry executive said.
Speaking at a recent national summit, Electronics Industries Association of India (ELCINA) president Sanjay Agarwal said that TN's electronics industry has the potential to reach industry output of $100 billion by 2025, contributing 25% of India’s total electronic exports.
Skilled manpower, port connectivity and good infrastructure is often cited as key benefits of TN by the industry. The growth of exports from Foxconn and the setting up of Pegatron has also strengthened the supply chain ecosystem leading to further deepening of the sector here.
